Vaccinating

Vaccinations for Cats and Dogs

Vaccinations are always important they enable the animal's immune system to establish the ability to fight off what would otherwise be a potential fatal disease.

CATS

When should I vaccinate?

Vaccines are usually given to kittens at nine weeks and then a follow up at 12 weeks. Please ensure that both doses are administered in order to provide maximum protection. Always check with you vet for regional variations.
Always remember your cat will require booster injections yearly in order to maintain an adequate level of protection.
When boarding your animal it is vitally important that the cat's injections are up to date. Proof will be required by the cattery.

What does my cat need to be vaccinated against?

Cat Flu viruses: although you cannot protect against all versions of this syndrome, it is still very worthwhile taking the precaution. The vaccine will offer protection from the most common versions, and although not usually fatal, a weaker animal might not survive just as with people really. Your cat should always be vaccinated against the two main strains herpesvirus and calicivirus.

Panleucopenia virus: Causes a severe gastroenteritis and without vaccination against this virus a cat stands a big risk of becoming infected and could possibly die. Please vaccinate.

The two vaccinations above (Cat Flu, Panleucopenia) are generally offered as a combination vaccination.

Chlamydia and Feline Leukaemia: the decision as to whether your cat needs these vaccines is dependent on your cat's lifestyle and surrounding environment; you should consult your vet.

DOGS

When does my dog need vaccinating?

Usually puppy vaccination take place at eight weeks with follow up 7 to 10 days later. Your puppy should not be allowed outside other than in your private space until full vaccination is completed. Please remember in order to maintain the correct level of protection you must ensure boosters are administered by the vet every year. When boarding your dog always make sure that their vaccinations are up to date. A reputable kennels will always require proof of this.

What does my dog need vaccinating against?

All dogs need vaccinating against the four disease that can affect dogs and of which once contracted there is little hope of survival. They are:

Distemper
Canine viral hepatitis
Leptospirosis
